Four emerging Indigenous scholarly practitioners, utilizing their respective EdD studies at Western University (London, Ontario, Canada), and one ally share deeply personal stories of self, growth, vulnerability, and pruning as educational leaders as an outcome of EdD program opportunities and limitations, and recommendations towards improving the post-secondary educational experiences of Indigenous students. This interactive panel discussion takes participants on a learning journey through past stories, present colonial power structures, and reaching a turning point that nurtures change.

Presenters:

Scott Lowrey 

Dr. Lowrey is a settler Canadian scholarly practitioner, invited ally, and Assistant Professor (Standing Appointment) with Western University’s Doctor of Education (EdD) Educational Leadership online program. 

Nicole Brouwer

Dr. Brouwer is a European and Ojibwe (Garden River First Nation) scholarly practitioner and principal of a K-12 faith-based school in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. 

Wayne Davies 

Dr. Davies is the (Red River Metis) Director of Student Teaching - University of Winnipeg with 32 years as educator and school & district leader in K-12 system, educational consultant, and author. 

Dr. Shelly Hopper

Dr. Hopper is a Red River Metis scholarly practitioner and Anti-Racist Education Professional Learning Initiative Coordinator with the Community Education Development Association (CEDA). 

Lindy Phelps-Henderson

Dr. Phelps-Henderson is a member of the Manitoba Metis Federation and the Red River homeland. She lives and works in Treaty 3 territory where she serves as the Indigenous Language Coordinator for the public-school board as well as the principal of Kaa’Naa’Matay Wiigiiam, a K-12 land based school.
